This paper discusses the phenomenon of intentional distortion of a words’ spelling, a stage in the history of the Russian language with analogues in the past related to important parts of the present language system. It exists mainly in the Internet, so electronic resources are used to study it.

Our research allowed us to draw conclusions about the mechanisms for creating and perceiving distorted words and about the new combination of principles of Russian spelling that it reveals.
