The automated alignment and collation of manuscript variants is complicated by the fact that not all variation is philologically significant. This report describes an approach to preprocessing diplomatic (character-by-character, orthographically detailed) manuscript transcriptions to permit them to serve more effectively as input into an automated collation process.
