(4 часа лекций-презентаций, 23-24 ноября 2015 г.)

1. Transcribing and editing an Early Modern French text with TEI

This course will describe the principles of transcription that are used at the Center for Renaissance Studies, for Early Modern French texts. I will explain the history of the corpus « Epistemon », the changes we decided according to the evolution of tools and technology ; why we adopted the TEI standard so late, and what were, and sometimes, still are, the barriers and difficulties we meet in our projects : non-Unicode characters, ligatures, spelling variants, unknown words, missing punctuation…

2. From the basic to the critical edition of annotated books (the example of Montaigne)

We will take up practical exercices with Montaigne’Essays. The students can download a page of the annotated edition by Montaigne himself (see the Montaigne Project in Chicago for the fac-simile : http://artflsrv02.uchicago.edu/images/montaigne/0035.jpg, from I, 21 « De la force de l’imagination »). The transcription of the additions is already on line on the BVH website (http://www.bvh.univ-tours.fr/MONLOE/1,21_diplo.pdf). We shall also observe a page that is not yet published in the original transcription, such as http://artflsrv02.uchicago.edu/images/montaigne/0415.jpg (III, 8, « De l’art de conférer »). I will explain why we wish to offer a new critical edition of the text, wheras Chicago displays one of the modern editions (Paris, 1965).

Note : there are several old English translations of the Essays on line (Florio 1603,  Cotton 1700 and after), which can help understanding the text.
